The Australian Flammability Monitoring System (AFMS) is the first continental-scale prototype web service providing spatial information on Live Fuel Moisture Content (LFMC) and landscape flammability conditions derived from satellite observations. The system has been publicly available for around two years and despite a general agreement of the usefulness of the information it provides, there are still uncertainties around how to implement it in an operational context, how it links to moisture conditions of soil or dead fuel, and what its future is.
Dr Mata Yebra (Australian National University), Mapping bushfire hazard and impactsproject lead, presents an overview of the current and near future capabilities of the AFMS and provides her vision of the system's future.
