Prof Jason Sharples, Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC researcher from the University of New South Wales, was elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering at a ceremony on 26 November.
The Academy have appointed 27 new Fellows who are at the top of their fields, encompassing sustainable agriculture and construction, renewable energy, telecommunication, mineral resources, civil engineering, pharmaceuticals, robotics and artificial intelligence.
Prof Sharples, a Bundjalung man, uses complex predictive mathematical models to prevent catastrophic bushfires by forecasting danger periods and predicting areas where small fires could develop into big ones. His research, conducted through the Fire coalescence and mass spotfire dynamics project, framed the recommendations of the 2019-20 NSW Bushfire Inquiry.
