This month, several new CRC research publications have become available on the website, including research reports and journal articles.
CRC reports
A/Prof Chris Bearman (CQUniversity), A/Prof Benjamin Brooks (University of Tasmania), A/Prof Christine Owen (University of Tasmania) and Dr Steven Curnin (University of Tasmania) have written a report for the CRC project Improving decision-making in complex multi-team environments. The report introduces the human centred design process and shows how it was used to develop decision making and team management tools. Along with Peter Hayes (CQ University) and Heather Stuart (New South Wales State Emergency Service), an annual report for the project was written that examines team monitoring, decision making and organisational learning within emergency management agencies.
Jeff Newman (University of Adelaide), Graeme Dandy (University of Adelaide), Aaron Zecchin (University of Adelaide), Adj A/Prof Hedwig van Delden (Research Institute for Knowledge Systems), Dr Charles Newland (University of Adelaide) and Graeme Riddell (University of Adelaide) have written a report for the CRC core project Improved decision support for natural hazard risk reduction. The research outlines a decision-support framework for natural hazard management that combines the use of simulation and optimisation for exploring what risk reduction measures best achieve management priorities.
Dr Phil Morley, A/Prof Elaine Barclay and Dr Melissa Parsons from the University of New England have written a literature review on the CRC project Factors affecting long term community recovery. The report reviews Australian and international literature on the long term recovery of communities that have been impacted by natural hazards, focusing on the barriers and enablers of effective long term recovery.
Prof Alan March (University of Melbourne), Dr Leonardo Nogueira de Moraes (University of Melbourne), Graeme Riddell (University of Adelaide), Prof Stephen Dovers (University of Adelaide), A/Prof Janet Stanley (University of Melbourne), Adj A/Prof Hedwig van Delden (Research Institute for Knowledge Systems), Prof Ruth Beilin (University of Melbourne) and Prof Holger Maier (University of Adelaide) have written two reports for the CRC project Urban planning for natural hazard mitigation. The first report looks at integrating bushfire risk reduction and statutory mechanisms in South Australia. The second report presents the development of an analytical framework for assessing integration between urban planning and emergency management arrangements and practice and its application in a real case in the state of Victoria.
A journal article by Dr Stefanie Grimaldi, J Xu, Dr Yuan Li and Prof Jeffrey Walker from Monash University was published in the Remote Sensing of Environment in the paper Flood mapping under vegetation using single SAR acquisitions. The research explores the role of errors within the modelling process to give an understanding of the confidence provided by any predictions. The work falls under the CRC student project Improving flood forecast skill using remote sensing data.
Dr Alexander Filkov, Dr Thomas Duff and A/Prof Trent Penman from the University of Melbourne were published the journal article Frequency of Dynamic Fire Behaviours in Australian Forest Environments in Fire. The work is part of the CRC project Threshold conditions for extreme fire behaviour which investigates the conditions and processes under which bushfire behaviour undergoes major transitions, evaluates the consequences of eruptive fire behaviour, and determines the combination of conditions for such behaviours to occur.
