This project was completed with the support of the CRC's funding for quick response. The project explored how effectively Mechanical Fuel Load Reduction (MFLR) can be implemented with prescribed burning by exploring and mapping the Tathra region.
Mapping took into account factors including:
- access to the area
- existing land clearance regulations near residential properties
- terrain, elevation and slope
- ecological effects of fires.
The project explored how wildfires affected water quality and soils in the region. This helped to understand short term effects of fires, impact on human settlement, economic cost, and cultural, ecological and environmental aspects. The project also explored the geographical location of the area in regards to mosaic interface prescribed burning and understood ways of educating people about forest fuel load reduction.
