In the first field activity for the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC, our researchers joined with Bushfire CRC colleagues to conduct community-based research in New South Wales following the October bushfires.
Teams are now preparing similar research visits to communties impacted by the January fires in South Australia and Western Australia.
This important research in NSW, undertaken at the request of the NSW Rural Fire Service in the Port Stephens, Blue Mountains and the Southern Highlands areas, will add to the data collected earlier this year in other areas of NSW, along with data collected from similar work following Black Saturday in 2009, the Perth Hills and Lake Clifton fires (WA, 2011) and Tasmania’s Forcett fire in January this year.
In addition, at the request of the Fire and Rescue NSW, the BNHCRC undertook interviews on the effectiveness of Community Fire Units during the Blue Mountains fires.
