This PhD project is designed to explore the potential to develop a tool for the improved communication of heat stress risk and management of exposure of individuals. The project responds to an extant lack of communication with new arrivals to the ‘Top End’ as to heat stress risks, particularly during hot and humid weather. This is of concern to the Environmental Health Branch of the NT Government’s Department of Health (confirmed end-users), who are willing to explore financially supporting the development of a tool that helps communicate this risk effectively. The objective is to build on the initial results of the BNHCRC B1.2.5 project research into individual daily practices and how these shape heat management (including the correlation of practices with their effect on core body temperature), which will support analysis of the ideal method of delivery and timing of heat management information for the target population. In particular the PhD project will explore the effectiveness of climate indices and associated heat stress warnings, that include the Thermal Comfort Index, humidex, apparent temperature and WBGT values in successfully communicating heat stress risk.
