Hazard Note 112 – The benefits of strengthening buildings against earthquakes
Although the international reinsurance industry recognises that a moderate earthquake is a serious financial risk, there is still the perception in the Australian construction industry that designing for earthquakes is a poor use of money due to the low likelihood of strong seismic activity in Australia.
Researchers at the University of Adelaide and Geoscience Australia identified the two most vulnerable forms of construction commonly used in Australia – unreinforced masonry buildings and low-ductility reinforced concrete buildings – and then examined the most cost-effective techniques available to mitigate fatalities, damage, business interruption and heritage structure impacts.
The evidence presented in Hazard Note 112 enables building owners and governments to make cost-effective decisions about strengthening buildings against earthquake damage.
