Watch the latest videos explaining our research and what we've discovered so far.
Project leader Andrew Gissing features in two videos covering different aspects of this research. In the first video Andrew explains the Catastrophic and cascading events: planning and capability project and what it is aiming to achieve. This project is in its inital stages, and Andrew outlines the frameworks which will be developed to assist emergency managers to better deal with catastrophic disasters.
Andrew also talks about his 2017 project using funding for quick response from the CRC which looked at the impacts of heatwaves on Australian households and businesses. Andrew and his team interviewed people after the February 2017 heatwave in Sydney and northern NSW to gather data about how households are adapting to the extreme heat and the effectiveness of the warnings which are in place.
Urban planning is also in focus, with Professor Alan March outlining the Urban planning for natural hazard mitigation project with began last year. This new project aims to create new and innovative methods of integrating urban planning and natural hazard risk management to create safer environments.
Tsunami risk is the focus of Miles Crawford for his CRC PhD at Massey University. Miles explains how his research looks at how tsunami risk modelling informs New Zealand local government policies and procedures. Miles has found so far that the risk modelling has helped local councils understand the risk they face and what they can do to improve their risk management policies and procedures.
