International Day for Disaster Reduction 2018 - full session

All around the world on 13 October each year the International Day for Disaster Reduction highlights how at risk communities are reducing their exposure to disasters.

Themes for this day change each year and are based on the Sendai Seven Campaign – 7 Targets, 7 Years. Following the tradition of recent years, the CRC hosted an Australian event in Adelaide. A diverse panel came together to explore Target C of the Sendai Framework: Reduce direct disaster economic loss in relation to global gross domestic product by 2030.

Hear from academic, government and agency perspectives as panellists explored the real cost of disasters, how their work is helping build disaster resilient communities, and looked to the future at what still needs to be done to reduce disaster risk.

This video is the full session, and features Professor Alan March (University of Melbourne and Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC), Frank Crisci (SA Power Networks), Jillian Edwards (National Resilience Taskforce, Department of Home Affairs), Malcolm Jackman (SAFECOM), Peta O'Donohue (Country Fire Service, South Australia). A short highlights clip is available at https://youtu.be/DMMtP3RlHMY

This public forum was run in partnership with the South Australian Fire and Emergency Services Commission and the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience, with support from the Department of Home Affairs and SA Water.
