Impact of natural disasters experienced by people living with chronic cardiovascular disease health conditions

Evidence suggests that adverse weather and natural disasters significantly impact cardiovascular disease, leading to increased hospital presentations, admissions and mortality rates following natural hazards. The exacerbation of chronic health conditions often has a greater impact than the direct effects of disasters, with rates of arrhythmias, hypertension, heart failure and other cardiac issues rising by up to 50 per cent and lasting for months or years. However, firsthand experiences of those affected by cardiovascular disease remain underreported in studies of natural hazards.

This research explores the experiences of Australians with chronic health issues when exposed to natural hazards. By conducting interviews, it aims to identify gaps between patients' needs and the support offered in existing response plans during disasters. The findings may provide evidence for improving these plans and support to enhance patient and community outcomes in the future.
