Interdisciplinary collaborative platform for reducing future bushfire risk and increasing community resilience

There is a pressing need for fire managers to adapt to rapidly-changing environments and learn from experiences of diverse actors across the sector. This project will build knowledge of current challenges and successes of existing bushfire risk management systems to provide evidence to support investment in long-term programs for mitigation and risk reduction. This research is designed to draw from interdisciplinary collaborations and knowledge to propose community-centred bushfire risk management systems that can quickly adapt to rapidly changing environments. 

The outcomes of this project will contribute to strengthening disaster resilience in Australia. As rural-urban interfaces become increasingly exposed to catastrophic bushfires, innovative solutions are required to build resilience. Community-centred risk reduction strategies can build a sense of ownership and are proven to support the adoption of innovative mitigation strategies in rapidly changing environments. This project will highlight opportunities for fire managers to work closely with communities to propose economically viable models for sustainable risk reduction strategies supported by the community to increase community and landscape resilience to future bushfires.
