About
Dr Michael Rumsewicz

Michael Rumsewicz left the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC in October 2017. Dr John Bates is now the Research Director.

Michael Rumsewicz's studies were undertaken at the University of Adelaide where he graduated with a first class honours degree in Applied Mathematics in 1984 and was awarded his PhD in 1989.

From 1988-1994 Michael worked at Bellcore (USA) as a member of the Network Services Performance and Control Group, specialising in performance analysis of telecommunications systems and played a leading role in Signalling System Number 7 congestion control research and outage analysis efforts. In 1994 he returned to Australia and led performance analysis research at The Software Engineering Research Centre of The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (1994-1999), where he developed new concepts on robustness and scalability for distributed web server platforms and subsequently managed their technology transfer to Ericsson.

Michael joined the the University of Adelaide in October 2002 as a Senior Research Fellow, and became a Professorial Research Fellow in March 2004. From 2004 to 2009 Michael was Director of the Teletraffic Research Centre and the Centre for Defence Communications and Information Networking where he led a team of 10 staff, mostly PhD qualified, undertaking high end commercial research and development work, primarily in the telecommunications space. During that time, Michael led major projects supporting Telstra's mobile network, developed links with the defence community, and led major initiatives such as the creation of the Defence Systems Innovation Centre and the establishment of the South Australian Networking Laboratory with funding from the Government of SA's Premier's Science and Research Fund.

After approximately 20 years in the telecommunications  industry and academia, Michael moved on to become the Business Development Manager in the School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering with the primary responsibility for building links and growing research funding from industry and government in areas spanning water, structural and mining engineering.

Michael joined the Bushfire & Natural Hazards CRC as Research Manager in September 2013 and in January 2016 was appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Australian Journal of Emergency Management.
