Managing animals during a hazard (Bendigo Advertiser)
The latest podcast from Emergency Management Australia is focused squarely on animals in emergencies, and features Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC researchers.
Dr Mel Taylor (Macquarie University) and Dr Kirrilly Thompson (CQU) from the Managing Animals in Disasters project are featured in the podcast - an informative, interesting and useful discussion around the interaction between the emergency services and pet owners, as well as the importance of having disaster plans for animals.
Also featured in the podcast are two survivors of catastrophic disasters reflecting about the role animals played in their decision making on the day, ACT emergency service authorities on how they have worked with horse owners to avoid a repeat of some of the tragedies of the 2003 Canberra firestorm, and World Animal Protection talking about their part in developing national principles that help emergency management authorities address challenges around managing animals in an emergency situation.
