The ability of authorities to communicate information about BNH effectively has been a major source of concern in more densely populated regions of southern Australia. Improvements in technology and the ability to send a message have not always resulted in behavioural changes consistent with the message. In northern Australia and its neighbouring nations, distance and technology combine with LLN difficulties to further impede the ability to stimulate appropriate action in communities. At the same time, many indigenous communities demonstrate an ability to identify and verify information to mitigate BNH hazards using traditional approaches and communication networks. A key component of the success of these networks (where they exist) appears to be a widely shared understanding of the hazard, its consequences and most appropriate personal strategy to minimise impact in different environments. This project will explore how indigenous people in different settings (countries) vary in the ability to communicate about BNH and the degree to which communication along traditional lines leads to appropriate action. The project will then examine mechanisms for emulate the successful approaches in the wider context of technological modern northern Australia.
