Gretel Evans is a PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne. Her research engages with disaster and migration scholarship by utilising oral history and memory studies to investigate migrants’ memories of Australian natural disasters. She is especially interested in how natural disasters influence identity and belonging within the Australian community and landscape. Gretel has participated in archaeology projects in Australia and Macedonia, and was a Summer Scholar at the Australian National University in 2013/14 where she conducted research into the 2003 Canberra Bushfires. In 2016 she was a Summer Scholar at the National Library and examined oral history interviews with migrants and survivors of natural disasters. Gretel is also an interviewer and research assistant for the YCW (Young Christian Workers) Oral History project.
