New faces and networking

Our first annual conference is now complete, and it was a very successful week. Thanks must got to everyone that attended for so enthusiastically welcoming all the new researchers and your overwhelming support of the Research Forum – sold out with nearly 400 delegates for our very first effort.

With the inclusion of other natural hazards outside of bushfire, we are welcoming plenty of new faces into the CRC, both researchers and industry end users. Having so many of these people in the one place for a few days in Wellington was fantastic. Putting a face to the name and having a coffee together is a vital part of the process. It might be in the name, but cooperative is very much a part of the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC. Keep in contact regularly and often to continue to build links between researchers and practitioners.

The involvement of 12 of our Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC PhD scholarship students in the conference was another highlight. It was very pleasing to see them connecting with the industry throughout the week. I’d like to particularly thank the guest speakers who took the time to speak at our professional development session; Ed Pikusa from the South Australian Fire and Services Commission, Country Fire Service Chief Officer Greg Nettleton, researcher Blythe McLennan from RMIT and John Richardson of the Red Cross. The enlightening talks of these four people were a great introduction to the PhD students (and others) who are new to the emergency service sector.

We'll see you in Adelaide in September 2015, if not earlier.
